​Scanlog and Green Cargo’s partnership is decreasing carbon dioxide emissions for Findus through a direct rail link between Sweden and Italy

Green Cargo’s direct round-trip trains between Scandinavia and Italy run several times a week for the Swedish business community. Goods are reloaded at our destinations and new freight is transported on return journeys, such as pasta and tomato sauce from Italy to supermarkets in Sweden. Findus is one of several companies that is choosing sustainable rail transportation solutions through collaboration between Scandinavian Logistics Partners (Scanlog) and Green Cargo.

“We’re a logistics company focused on reducing the environmental impact of our shipments, and we want to use environmentally friendly alternatives for our customers. It feels natural and right to engage Green Cargo for our transportation for Findus through the direct line Italy Direct, which runs between Scandinavia and Italy,” says Martin Ytander, CCO of Scanlog.

Scanlog works continuously with environmental-impact assessments and integration in its customer solutions to follow up and deliver correct information to customers, which is a good complement to Green Cargo’s sustainable transportation solutions throughout Europe. Scanlog will transport around 120 consignments via trailers for Findus, which is the equivalent of about 60 wagons per year, with Green Cargo’s direct line from Italy.

“The foundation of the sustainability efforts at Findus is a constant review of different solutions that contribute to sustainability without compromising taste or quality, and all at a competitive price. By transporting products via a rail link between northern Italy and Sweden, Findus can reduce its energy consumption per shipment by a third, and its carbon dioxide emissions by more than a tonne. Additionally, sulfur and nitrogen emissions, compared with the equivalent amount in truckloads, are halved,” says Maria Svantemark, Nordic Sustainability Manager at Findus.

Investing in more fossil-efficient transportation alternatives is part of Findus’s long-term sustainability strategy. During the last few years, Findus has imported goods with different transportation methods, but now delivery will be via the railway system in Europe for more environmentally-friendly logistics.

“It’s positive for Green Cargo to run return cargo to Sweden, in connection with our own rail solutions between Scandinavia and Europe, such as the direct line Italy Direct. Rail is the most climate-smart transportation method, both today and in the future. We have positive developments in business with Scanlog, a professional and forward-looking customer,” says Björn Thunqvist, Strategic Sales Executive at Green Cargo.

The transportation sector accounts for about 30 percent of carbon dioxide emissions in Sweden. To reach the Global Sustainable Development Goals, railway transportation should be chosen whenever possible.
