Eskilstuna’s new marshalling yard opened
CEO Jan Kilström rode on a locomotive when Eskilstuna’s new marshalling yard opened on Monday. The yard represents a clear investment in line with the company’s growth strategy.
“The new marshalling yard will enable smooth collaboration between our train and maintenance operations. Our wagon maintenance depot is now more appropriately located in the logistic flow and wagon shunting distances have been shortened, saving both time and money. We have eliminated our previous lack of capacity and will no longer have the same need to use Folkesta as an unloading terminal. By using Eskilstuna as a hub for all container freight to the east coast, we can offer efficient and punctual transportation between all of Mälardalen and Gothenburg. The new marshalling yard will raise efficiency for our customers and our own operations,” says Jan Kilström.
Benefits many
Talks between the Municipality of Eskilstuna and Green Cargo regarding a new marshalling yard started in the summer and autumn of 2015. Together with the Swedish Transport Administration and Train Alliance, Green Cargo was one of the property owners in the marshalling yard area.
The Municipality of Eskilstuna needed access to the marshalling yard area to gain the space to build a new service depot and workshop for passenger trains, which would be leased to the contractor MÄLAB, and partly to open possibilities for developing the city district and being able to build new housing.
The meetings between the municipality and Green Cargo gained momentum around the end of 2015. In December 2016, an agreement covering the new marshalling yard was signed. Then things started moving quickly. Contractor procurements were carried out in July 2017, construction started in August and, now in November, the marshalling yard has been completed.
“This project is a good example of how things turn out when we group together behind a shared goal. Collaboration with the municipality and the chosen contractors functioned exactly as intended. We are expanding our operations here in Eskilstuna and I know that this is due to the fantastic work put in by all our employees. Further proof of how as a team we are making Green Cargo stronger,” concludes Jan Kilström.
