First train arrives at Stockholm Norvik Port

The first scheduled freight train is now in service on the industrial track to the new freight port, Stockholm Norvik Port. Ports of Stockholm built the railway line, which will enable more sustainable transportation and expands the different transportation alternatives to and from the port.

On Tuesday, June 9, the first Green Cargo train ran along the new industrial track to Stockholm Norvik Port. Ports of Stockholm built just over four kilometers of industrial track to connect Stockholm Norvik Port with the rail network, an investment of SEK 800 million.

“It’s great that the first train has arrived at Stockholm Norvik Port. The industrial track connects Stockholm Norvik Port to Sweden’s entire rail network and comprises an important precondition for sustainable transportation and for offering good service to our customers,” says Johan Wallén, Chief Commercial Officer at Ports of Stockholm.

Ports of Stockholm will be responsible for operating the railway line.

Facts about the industrial track

• 4,400 meters long
• Plus, a 360-meter track in the docks
• A marshalling yard with three tracks of 750 meters each
• A spur track of 100 meters

Stockholm Norvik Port opened in May and is comprised of two parts. A container terminal that replaces the container terminal at Frihamnen in Stockholm and is operated by Hutchison Ports, one of the world’s largest container operators with 52 ports in 27 countries. The other portion is a ro-ro terminal for rolling stock that is operated by Ports of Stockholm and is expected to open in the autumn.

Ports of Stockholm supports waterborne traffic and secures the region’s supply chain by offering quay-berths, facilities and services for ferry, cruise and goods traffic. Ports of Stockholm has facilities in Stockholm, Kapellskär and Nynäshamn. It has 190 employees on average and the group generated SEK 890 million in revenue in 2019.
